  • Karen Horney

1.Is mental illness genetic? How much do genes affect a person’s ability to have mental health?

Addictive behaviors, bipolar disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and depression are some of the wide range of mental health conditions that affect our behavior, mood, and thinking. Every so often, many individuals have mental health concerns. But such mental health disorders become mental illness when continuing symptoms and signs lead to stress and curtail a person’s ability to function normally. For most of us, we are conscious of the problems that mental illness can cause. We have most likely seen how it can make life miserable to live. And yet it has always been difficult to get our minds around what really causes mental illness.

With mental illness being prevalent in many families, it has become natural for people to develop concerns about the inherited risks of developing mental health disorders. As might be anticipated, individual from families with a history of mental illness live in constant worry of inheriting the mental health issues that run in their families, and rightly so. Genetics is indeed an intricate thing, and so is its connection to mental health disorders. Notably, there is no single gene that has been proven to certainly cause mental illness. However, mental illness is common in individuals whose blood relatives have mental health disorders.

Take depression, a common health disorder, for instance. Estimates from the Stanford University School of Medicine show that 10% of individuals in the U.S. battle depression someday in their lifespan. Those whom depression run in their family run 2 to 3 times greater risk of developing depression at some point in the course of their life compared to the average individual. Besides, a 2014 meta-analysis of 33 studies published in the Schizophrenia Bulletin journal established that children from parents suffering from major depressive disorders, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorders had more than twice risk (1 in 3 chance) of developing one of those disorders when they mature compared to children from parents without severe mental disorders.

Mental illness does run in families. As such, there are high chances that individuals with a blood relative with mental health disorder may somewhat develop it. It is irrefutable that genes can act as a medium that pass on susceptibility in families. Nonetheless, we must note that insofar as we may inherit susceptibility to a mental disorder, it is not a guarantee that we develop that particular mental illness. More importantly, other factors, including traumatic events, stress, or abuse can trigger or influence mental illness we are susceptible to.

Hence, it is problematic to simply think of mental illness as purely genetic. Individuals do not simply “inherit” mental health disorders.  Other factors, including the environment, habits, traumatic events, stressful life situations, drug abuse, ongoing medical conditions, and brain damage are also at play.

That notwithstanding, family history does present an indication of potential risk for some particular mental illness. So it helps to know our family history.
