Your Learning Portfolio (LP) is an assessment to see how you have used and assimilated information over the course of the module, how you have related your academic learning to real-life experiences, and also for you to see how your ideas regarding leadership and becoming a leader have developed. Therefore the focus is mainly on personal development and critical reflection. Please refer to the Handbook for lecture notes for additional guidelines and remember to include the following 4 sections in your Learning Portfolio:

1) Week of Submission: The week, date and title or each entry should be included. Clearly label all parts of your Learning Portfolio (LP)
2) Themes of Interest: What key themes have emerged from the module so far that are the most meaningful or significant to you? What have you found particularly useful or interesting? You can simply list these here and discuss them in more detail in the following sections.
3) Reflection and Application: This is the most important section of each of your LP entries and is the only section of each entry that counts towards your final word count. Read the additional materials provided on VITAL on how to produce effective critical reflective writing to help with this section and also consider the following: How has the information that you have discussed in class, and subsequently researched on your own, helped you to understand leadership, the type of leader that you are or want to be, and the leadership skills that you have developed/are developing? Have your ideas and views of leadership changed and if so how and why? Have you found any leadership stories inspiring or motivating? How has your understanding of leadership and your own ability to lead developed? Remember that application is also an important part of your reflection. Consider how you will apply (or have applied) what you have learned.

4)Reading and Research: Your LP should note all of the reading that you have done in the weeks corresponding to this LP entry (e.g. 1-4, 4-8 or 8-12) as well as including all the references that you have referred to in section 3. To distinguish between those references that you have cited in your reflection and those that you have read but not used here, please use a different colour to highlight the latter (e.g. type these in red). This reading list is expected to include both recommended reading from the module handbook and external reading of your own from recommended blogs, journals, newspapers and textbooks. A minimum of 2 external readings should be undertaken every week and this should be demonstrated clearly here.

Yes, you can. You can just refer to the previous entry by using expressions such as “as mentioned in Week 4’s entry,…”.

How many themes of interest should be included in each submission?

There is no magic number, it is up to you. For guidance, please consider that between 1 and 3 themes is usual, as discussing any more than this would probably lead to covering each theme superficially – which we want to avoid. If you are only focusing on one theme, a great deal of depth would be expected. It is likely that you may discuss two or three themes that are very much interlinked, and, therefore, discussion of all themes are integrated. Overall, it is not the number of themes covered that is important but rather the quality and depth of your discussions and critical reflections.

Should the themes of interest be different for each entry (Weeks 4, 8 and 12)?

Yes, we would expect each entry to cover something different although different entries can certainly be interlinked. Good LPs will draw together the learning across the three entries within the Conclusion section of the final LP submission in Week 12.

With regard to the “Reading and Research” section of the LP, can the external reading include articles and sources listed under the Additional Reading on Vital?
Yes! Anything NOT included under “Essential Reading” can be considered external reading.

With regard to the final LP submission in Week 12, should I just copy and paste the past LP entries (Week 4 and 8) or am I allowed to make some changes to them?

No, these elements do not count towards the word limit. Only the “Reflection and Application” section as well as the Introduction and Conclusion sections in the final LP submission are included in the word count.

With regard to the structure of the final LP (Week 12), can I add a table of contents to help you to navigate the portfolio? If so, does that fall within the word count or not?
Yes, you can add a table of content. No, this does not count towards your word limit.

Again with regard to the structure of the final LP (Week 12), how do we manage the reference lists? Should we include three separate lists for each LP entry or should we merge all the references in a single list at the end of the document?
The format of the LP is quite flexible, so you are free to choose. In general, it may be clearer to list all your references at the end of the final LP. Please do not forget to include your external reading (in a different font colour, see the Module Handbook).

Can we include Appendices in the final LP?

Yes, of course you can (and they do not count towards the word limit).
