Title

A short title of your proposal that introduces the topic to the reader.

Background (Approx. 600 – 800 words)

This section should identify the ‘problem’ that your research seeks to address, and how the
research is located alongside the existing academic literature. You will need to provide a
short, summary literature review identifying the concepts, theories and key research on the
topic, and highlight how your research will contribute to this literature by identifying the key
limitations of the existing literature, and explaining how your research will make a
contribution to the existing knowledge on the topic. Make sure to reference all literature
you refer to. Don’t rely on quotes from sources: explain things in your own words. Tell the
reader about the literature.

Research question

Here you need to state your research question, hypothesis or proposition, leading directly
from the background section of your proposal. Your research question needs to be clearly
justified by your discussion of the existing research literature.Research aims (Approx. 75 – 150 words)
A set of dot points detailing the key aims of your research. These provide your reader a
summary of what to expect in your research design by clearly explaining how your research
will address your research question.

Research design (Approx. 75 – 150 words)

Explain here what your research design will be (e.g. qualitative, quantitative, mixedmethod), and what kind of project is being undertaken (e.g. explanatory, exploratory etc.)
Summarise what kinds of data you will seek to capture (e.g. narrative experiences, existing
documents etc.) and explain why these kinds of data are necessary for addressing your
research question. Make sure you reference methods texts and course readings to
demonstrate your understanding of these concepts.

Research method (Approx. 1000 – 1200 words)

First, detail the steps of:

  • How you will recruit participants for your research OR
  • How you will select documents or other artefacts
  • Where your participants or documents are located, and how they will be accessed
Make sure to explain your inclusion / exclusion criteria clearly. Explain your sampling
    technique where appropriate.
Next, detail the steps of your data collection method/s. Discuss, with reference to methods
texts and course readings, the process you propose to undertake to capture or generate the
data you will need. Explain what method of data collection you are using, why it is
appropriate, and how it is to be used. Identify any limitations in your data collection
method/s that may exist. Detail where appropriate:
  • The key themes in the questions that may be asked to participants
  • The key themes for analysis within social artefactsFinally, explain your proposed method of analysis with reference to methods texts and
course readings. Explain to the reader why your chosen method of analysis is appropriate
    for your research question.

Ethics (Approx. 300 – 500 words)

Here, you need to identify and explain any potential ethical issues that may be present
within your research, however minor you think they may be. You may think about potential
ethical concerns across the dimensions of:

  • Psychological
  • Social
  • Physical
  • Legal
  • Financial
  • Other
Make sure to include any potential risks to the researcher!
For any and each of the risks you identify, you need to explain (again with reference to
appropriate texts and course readings) how you will attempt to address / mitigate these
risks in order to ensure that your research is ethical. It would be good practice here to
consult and reference the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research when
working through the ethical concerns in your project. Note: just because you might be
doing research that doesn’t involve human participants, doesn’t automatically mean your
    research is ethical!
    References
Make sure to include a reference list that is formatted in a recognised academic style in
alphabetical order (whatever referencing style your discipline uses is fine, as long as it’s
consistent). Don’t include sources that you don’t directly reference in your proposal
